For recreational athletes, the implication is narrow but useful: rehabilitation sessions do not need to pursue the same loading target every time. Strength work and motor-control work can run concurrently, while the session emphasis changes with the current training response.

A fixed progression can misread the athlete

Linear progression assumes that the next exposure should exceed the last one in a planned sequence. That structure becomes difficult when rehabilitation status changes between sessions. The paper’s case for non-linear periodization rests on this mismatch: recovery is unpredictable, while the programme needs enough flexibility to adjust load.

In practice, “load” is not just external resistance. It includes the task selected, the resistance-training demand, and the motor-control requirement. A session can therefore shift emphasis without abandoning the broader rehabilitation plan.

This avoids a common programming error: treating every low-readiness session as a failed strength session. If the athlete cannot tolerate the planned strength demand, the session can still target movement control rather than forcing the same progression.

Rotate the training emphasis, not the objective

The reported model allows strength and motor control to develop at the same time. That does not require both qualities to receive identical stress in every session.

One session can place the primary demand on force production. Another can reduce that demand and place more of the work in controlled movement tasks. That distinction matters. Non-linear periodization is not random exercise selection. It is frequent variation in training load with a fixed purpose. The athlete and coach need to know which component is being progressed in a given session: strength demand, motor-control demand, or the balance between them.

2. Select the training load to match that target rather than repeating the prior session automatically.

3. If the planned strength exposure is not appropriate for the current response, retain the session and shift its emphasis toward motor-control work.

4. Return to the broader progression at the next exposure rather than trying to compensate immediately for the altered session.

5. Record what changed: the loading emphasis, the movement task, and the athlete’s response.

The useful metric is not whether every session advances in a straight line. It is whether the programme continues to develop strength and motor control while adapting to the variability built into rehabilitation.
